Fussy Eating - Individual consultations

NW Speech offers individualised programs for children who are fussy eaters.

Sessions may take place in the family home, in a community setting (e.g. kinder or childcare) or via Skype.

What will the program involve?

Since no two children (or families) are the same, each program varies. But all NW Speech programs build on the following principles:
  • Children learn through play and social modelling
  • Children learn from the people they are closest to
  • Children learn well from routines
  • Children learn best when they are relaxed and having fun

With these principles in mind, I work closely with caregivers to look at what is happening at mealtimes and why your child is finding it hard to try new foods.  We will look at how children learn to eat and then together we will set some goals and develop a plan.

Here are some ways I work with clients:

  • I gather information about your child’s history of eating and mealtime behavior, what food your child is currently eating, what mealtimes look like now, and what you would like mealtimes to look like.
  • I will request to observe your child eating and look at their feeding skills.
  • Together we develop a plan and set specific goals to focus on.
  • I provide you with information on mealtime routines, how children learn and the steps involved in learning to eat.
  • We review progress and address issues that may arise.
  • We may do some "therapy meals" where we work on desensitising your child to particular foods through play.
  • I may request to speak to other caregivers (e.g. childcare staff) to learn more about your child’s mealtimes, or to share goals and strategies.
  • I may suggest a referral to another health professional such as a paediatrician, dietician or occupational therapist.

I take a family-centred approach, which means that I see you as the expert of your family.   You will decide the direction therapy will take, how often it occurs and where it takes place.  Each child and each family is unique, so each family's speech therapy program will also be unique and driven by them.
